Detroit’s Avenue of Fashion, one of the city’s most vibrant neighborhood business districts, hit a speed bump with scheduled construction along the shop’s busiest corridor.
It’s a massive project, albeit temporary one, according to shopowners contendng with foot traffic drops created as a result of limited parking and impassable sidewalks.
The $8 million streetscaping project underway will eventually make the area more attractive to businesses and patrons, but stores need to hang on. Since the project start:
Residents and business owners have rallied to support shops along business corridor during the worst of the construction efforts via events like “Livernois Soup,” a spin-off of Detroit Soup, which raises money for local small businesses, while increasing patronage at a time it is most needed.
This Thursday, Sept. 19 Over the Top Clothier, Lighthouse Christian Stores, Detroit Fiber Works, Art in Motion and Good Cakes and Bakes will vie for the bragging rights and cash award that come with “Soup” events.
For a donation of $5 attendees receive soup, salad, bread and a vote and hear from each of the four scheduled presenters of the Sept. 19 event taking place at 6 p.m. at Converzations Banquet and Event Center located on 20238 Livernois.
Residents are encouraged to come out and support the businesses they love on at “Livernois Soup” and to continue to support critical community activities like the upcoming “Light Up Livernois,” taking place Sept. 28 from noon to 10 p.m.
The event celebrates the design and creativity of the historic Avenue of Fashion and is “the place,” for makers artists and designers to showcase their latest lines through open studios, fashion vignettes, musical performances and small business highlights.
This year, to offset construction challenges, a free shuttle service will take patrons from the University of Detroit’s parking lot to the shopping district from 6 Mile to 8 Mile Roads.
The event is being sponsored by Design Core Detroit. Participating locations include:
