The Preservation of Jazz Signature Production Makes Its Cliff Bell’s Debut
DETROIT, MI — Sunday, September 13, 2026 — Take 5: The All-Male Jazz Revue, created and produced by Detroit jazz vocalist and producer Sky Covington, takes an exciting step forward this fall as the production makes its debut at historic Cliff Bell’s in downtown Detroit.
Created as the brother’s production to Covington’s acclaimed Satin Doll Revue, Take 5 grew from the same idea: bring the stories and music of legendary artists back to the stage through contemporary Detroit performers.
While Satin Doll places the spotlight on the great women of jazz, blues, and soul, Take 5 celebrates the great gentlemen whose voices and musicianship helped shape generations of American music.
The concept began several years ago as part of The Preservation of Jazz and has continued to develop with changing casts, musical legends, and interpretations. A 2023 presentation described Take 5 as a production highlighting both vocal stylists and instrumentalists, and subsequent editions expanded the artists and repertoire represented.

As The Preservation of Jazz continues to grow, its signature productions are beginning to move beyond their familiar stages and into new rooms and new audiences.
The September 13 debut at Cliff Bell’s represents an important milestone in that journey—bringing Take 5 into one of Detroit’s classic jazz settings while maintaining the intimacy, storytelling, musicianship, and personality that have defined the production from the beginning. Cliff Bell’s confirms two performances for the debut, at 5:30 PM and 7:30 PM.

Take 5 is not about impersonation. Each artist brings his own sound, personality, and interpretation to the music while honoring the legacy of the artists who came before him.
It is live music, storytelling, history, fellowship, and entertainment wrapped into one revue.
