Let’s Play Detroit: Family-friendly things to do this weekend

Whether it is planting apples, planting an idea or digging into your history, there are a variety of things to do in Detroit this weekend.

Check out a new orchard, head out for a bird and frog hike and see the latest Detroit Historical Museum exhibit honoring ARISE Detroit!

APPLE PLANTING. If your kids love digging around in the dirt, this event is going to be a sure fire hit and will give them an opportunity to get in at the ground level so to speak of Core Orchards.

Want to try to be Johnny Appleseed? Join Core Orchards as they start planting 350 Honeycrisp apple trees to create a demonstration orchard on the city’s east side.

DETROIT HISTORY. Take a walk through the Detroit Historical Museum’s ARISE Detroit! display. This special exhibit chronicles the creation of a social movement that has celebrated and preserved positive activity in Detroit neighborhoods.

Check out a piece of city history at the new ARISE Detroit! exhibit at the Detroit Historical Museum. The DTE Energy-sponsored exhibit, called “Neighborhoods Rising,” runs through June 18 at the Detroit Historical Museum, located at 5401 Woodward in Detroit. Admission is free.

Join a naturalist for an early morning birding hike. You’ll learn to identify frogs and toads by call and estimate population numbers. Bring binoculars or a bird book, if you have them. A limited number will be available for loan on a first-come, first-served basis. Wear comfortable shoes and dress for the weather.

GET YOUR GREEN ON. Did you know you can “catch” rain or where the many birds we see across our skies are actually headed? Learn that and more at an event that truly is meant to  help everyone see that it’s “good to be green.”

Grab the family and enjoy a fun-filled day of environmental activities sponsored by the Detroit RiverFront Conservancy and its partners. Scheduled activities include:

Spring Birding 101; 9:00 a.m. – 9:45 a.m.
Learn about the birds migrating along the Detroit River, play a short migration game and bird watch along the RiverWalk, while learning about how you can help migrating birds survive the long trek at this free event hosted by the Detroit Audubon Society

Rain Barrel Workshop; 9:45 a.m.- 11:00 a.m.
The Sierra Club and MI Rain Barrel will teach participants how to make a rain barrel to capture water from your home’s downspout. The water can be used for gardening, watering your lawn or washing your car. Material purchase required.

Recycling Workshop; 11:15 a.m.- Noon
Join Green Living Science/Zero Waste Detroit to learn about Detroit’s new curbside recycling program and how to practice the 3 Rs – Reduce, Reuse, Recycle. Each eligible participant will receive a FREE recycling cart ($25 value). In order to qualify, you must live in a single-family home or multi-unit housing dwelling under 4 units.

SLOW ROLL. Prepare yourself for one of the most exciting group bike rides around Detroit. Slow Roll is back for another year of rolling through our finest neighborhoods. Discover why Detroit is on a roll.

Slow Roll’s weekly rides kick-off this weekend. Meet-up at Detroit’s Eastern Market Shed 2 and ride along routes, which vary weekly. Slow Roll remains a free event, but does ask those able to do so to purchase an annual ($15) or premium membership ($60).

SEE A DIFFERENT SIDE OF DETROIT. Join the experienced tour guides from the Detroit Experience Factory who know how to bring history alive with their fun walking events.

In case of inclement weather, the People Mover will be used for transportation.

HINES DRIVE ROLL OUT. Plan next weekend around this one. Rain used to be the only thing that could shut this beauty down. Now everyone has a chance to roll through the scenic Hines Drive, which is covered in Spring blooms.

Beginning Saturday, May 6, Hines Drive will close to traffic from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Saturdays to provide a vehicle-free environment to walk, run, skate or cycle along a six-mile route. Parking is available at the Hines Park-Helms Haven Area (Hines Drive, west of Outer Drive) and Hines Park-Nankin Mills Picnic Area (Hines Drive, east of Ann Arbor Trail).

Sunday, April 29; 11 a.m. – 4 p.m.                          Family Day – Dossin Great Lakes Museum             The 4th Annual Spring Into Belle Isle Family Day features free activities and make-and-take crafts from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Sunday, April 29; 11 a.m. – 2 p.m.                           Road Rally  – Dossin Great Lakes Museum          The entire family will love this Road Rally. Meet-up at the Dossin’s Gothic Room. Families, couples or small groups of friends will pick-up instructions and work together to solve clues related to key locations on Belle Isle. Then, they’ll travel to the locations to find answers to a few questions. Unlike a scavenger hunt, the road rally is not timed and relies on earning points. The road rally takes a minimum of one hour to complete. Groups will not be sent out after 2 p.m., but completed road rally information will be accepted until 4 p.m. All teams that participate will earn a prize. CONNOR CREEK. Grab a bike and your favorite riding companion to check out this lovely greenway. It is a wonderful way to see the sights.

Bike along the Conner Creek Greenway paths, a mix of bike lanes, shared roadway and off-road paths, which begin at Maheras Gentry Park on the Detroit River and head north along Conner Avenue.
