Whether sweet, sassy, soulful or something in between, music unites us. And, as the weather finally breaks, it’s time to let music play at backyard barbecues, spring symphonies and as part of one of the Detroit’s favorite traditions, the Palmer Woods Music in Homes series.
This weekend, it’s time for salsa, sangria and swing amidst the backdrop of a beautiful Palmer Woods home designed by famed entertainment venue architect C. Howard Crane, whose work includes Orchestra Hall, Fox Theater, Fillmore Detroit, and Michigan Opera Theatre.
Guests are invited to tour the beautiful house that hosts this year’s event — location to be announced — followed by an evening of live performance by Orquesta La Inspiracion, mingling with friendly neighbors, and an authentic, Mexican meal prepared by Eva Garza Dewalesche, a Palmer Woods resident and recipient of President Obama’s Champion of Change award.
Salsa, merengue, cumbia and Afro-Caribbean jazz will spill into the night, so dancing is not an option at this event, which often sells out.
Founded by Puerto Rican congera Ozzie Rivera and under the musical direction of pianist Bill Meyer, La Inspiracion is a large ensemble of some of the Detroit area’s most talented musicians. The horn section is led by saxophonist Chris Kaercher, with Steve Hunter on trombone and Ken Ferry on trumpet. Percussion comes courtesy of Bobby Guzman, Enrique Hernandez and Miguel Gutierrez. Adding to the talent are rhythmic bassist Eduardo Caraballo, soulful vocals by Dulce Checkler, Bobby Guzman and guests Carter Collins and Audrey Northington.
La Inspiracion’s band director and pianist Bill Meyer is a Detroit treasure. The former music director, conductor and pianist for Motown’s Martha Reeves, he toured and recorded with jazz great Marcus Belgrave, and has worked with such acts as Smokey Robinson, Cab Calloway, Natalie Cole, Savion Glover, and many others.
There are still a few tickets available for the Palmer Woods Music in Homes event, which will take place at 8 p.m. Saturday, May 20 (more details available upon ticket purchase). Tickets at $50 or $70, with discounts for groups of 10 or more, can be purchased online at palmerwoods.org or by calling (313) 891-2514.
The Music in Homes series serves to promote Palmer Woods as a desirable place to live, and to support Detroit’s image, while boosting the local arts scene and city culture.
