They’ve been called “angels of mercy” and they’re known for taking temperatures and pulses. Even before the doctor walks in, a pleasant, professional nurse has a way of comforting the sick, using little more than a smile and a calming presence.
To celebrate the National Nurses Week, through May 12 Paralee Boyd Salon is offering all nurses who visit the Detroit location, 3939 Woodward Ave., a free treatment, consisting of deep conditioner, steam, protein, and hot oil. By displaying their professional company, clinic or hospital ID, nurses can enjoy the gift from the shop that caters to women with thicker grades of hair.
“National Nurses Week is important to Paralee Boyd because we believe in caring for those who care for us,” says owner Dana White. “With the proximity of our Midtown salon centrally located between two major hospitals, Detroit Medical Center and Henry Ford Health System, we thought it would be a great idea to offer a timely experience.”
White’s family has a special connection to many of the nurses employed by Detroit Medical Center. White’s aunt, Shawn Levitt is DMC’s chief nursing officer and the daughter of Paralee Boyd, for whom the shop is named. White is Boyd’s granddaughter.
Inspired by Detroit’s traditional industry models like car assembly and factory production, Paralee Boyd Salon promotes “applied principles of lean manufacturing.” Having consulted auto engineers to adapt a process of styling and service, especially for women with coarse hair, White launched her Detroit brand early this year.
She opened Paralee Boyd in Southfield, followed by the Woodward location, after living in New York. While in New York she learned about a styling process called the “Dominican blowout” that helped reduce time in the salon and improved her hair’s overall condition. The experience inspired White to improve the Dominican model.
The Detroit location of Paralee Boyd Salon offers walk-in service seven days a week.
