The giant moving sculptures that cavort across some of Detroit’s most popular areas will make you wonder whether you’ve wandered into a scene out of Bradbury or Asimov.
From now until mid-February, 16 brightly colored, larger-than-life bizarre machinations will light up the night in Detroit.
Called LuminoCITY, these activation sites are linked in two- to five-minute walking intervals, connecting more than 200 local restaurants, retailers, public spaces and office and residential buildings in the Central Business District.
The largest tower is nearly 80 feet tall.
All of the brightly colored architectural sculptures twist and writhe to a soundtrack and come to life with custom video mapping. Created from aluminum and fabric, they are designed to interact with people, so feel free to dance with them, touch them or simply watch them.
LuminoCITY started on Monday, January 9 and will remain through mid-February. You can find the sculptures at:
Capitol Park
East & West Grand Circus Park
Hart Plaza
Hudson’s site
Woodward Ave.
COBO Hall @ NAIAS (until Sunday, Jan. 22)

The LuminoCITY program is the result of a collaborative partnership led by Quicken Loans and Bedrock, with DTE Energy, City of Detroit – Parks and Recreation Department, Downtown Detroit Partnership and Detroit Economic Growth Corporation.
“With 800,000 people downtown for the Detroit auto show, it is an opportunity for the creation of new events and experiences. We want to promote the best things to do in the city to the large audience of visitors and metro Detroiters,” says Helen Johnson, vice president of community activation for Quicken Loans and Bedrock. “LuminoCITY will help create an environment that encourages people to walk and discover downtown, and hopefully increase visits to public spaces, businesses, restaurants, retailers, cultural institutions, galleries and events.”
The tech and design comes from the L.A.-based Steroebot, which creates temporary outdoor public space activation and is best known for its work at the Coachella Valley Arts and Music Festival in Indio, California.
LuminoCITY is the first winter presentation of its kind and brings together art, technology and design, all things Detroit is famous for creating. It highlights the city’s UNESCO City of Design designation while showcasing downtown to the tens of thousands of people who come down for the auto show, Winter Blast and other activities. The goal is to show Detroit is fun to be in and a great place to hang around.
“DTE Energy is proud to showcase these artistic, engaging and uniquely engineered light installations throughout the city of Detroit for visitors and residents to enjoy,” says Trevor F. Lauer, president and chief operating officer, DTE Electric. “We are committed to positively impacting Detroit’s economic prosperity and continued growth. Our support of this project helps to promote the innovation, culture, and vitality of Detroit for people from around the world to experience.”
