Detroit’s neighborhoods are on the rise. Millions of dollars are being invested in redevelopment efforts and the dollars continue to pour in.
Long before stories about those investments were tweeted or made the front page of the paper block clubs, churches, community groups and residents were working diligently to transform their neighborhoods. They were just doing it behind the scenes with no fanfare.
It’s time they got some credit.
Some of their work will be highlighted in an ARISE Detroit! exhibit at the Detroit Historical Museum. The exhibit, called “Neighborhoods Rising,” runs from April 22 through June 18 at the Detroit Historical Museum, located at 5401 Woodward in Detroit. Admission is free.
Church members, block clubs and other community groups are invited to attend a Community Day public grand opening on Saturday, April 22, from noon to 5 p.m. at the museum.
The exhibit focuses on the neighborhood people and programs that have partnered with ARISE Detroit! since the community mobilization nonprofit began in 2006.
The exhibit will feature nearly 200 photos, video and audio displays, a neighborhood cityscape and dozens of artifacts that have been part of the annual ARISE Detroit! Neighborhoods Day, the Neighborhood Summit and other activities.
“This is an exhibit truly by and for the people,” said Luther Keith, ARISE Detroit! executive director. “All of the groups and volunteers that have participated in Neighborhoods Day and other events have made this possible. We want the people to come down and see themselves. We think folks will be inspired.”
There were plenty of projects to showcase. Take Neighborhoods Day, for example.
ARISE Detroit! launched the event 10 years ago with 55 participating block clubs and other civic organizations. Last year it grew to 300 citywide events. Since 2007, when Neighborhoods Day began, ARISE Detroit! has promoted and marketed a cumulative total of more than 1,400 community improvement events and projects that celebrate the spirit of neighborhoods and promote community pride.
“Neighborhoods Rising” is sponsored by the DTE Energy Foundation.
Faye Nelson, vice president at DTE Energy and board chair and president of the DTE Energy Foundation said the exhibit further showcases “the heart and spirit of Detroit, which lies within the neighborhoods.”
