Detroit names new “Top Doc”

The Detroit Health Department will be headed by Dr. Suzanne White, according to an announcement issued by Mayor Duggan today.

Dr. White will begin serve as the Medical Director of the Detroit Health Department, where she will report directly to Executive Director Dr. Joneigh S. Khaldun beginning in late August.

Her responsibilities will include overseeing the communicable disease program, emergency preparedness, all direct clinical services, as well as health system engagement and supporting the city’s EMS and Fire Medical Direction.

“Dr. White is one of the most qualified medical professionals in the business and we are all excited for her to join the Detroit Health Department,” said Mayor Mike Duggan. “She has world-class experience in bringing quality medical care to the patients of the Detroit Medical Center and now she’ll bring that to Detroit residents across the city.”

Dr. White comes from the DMC, where she was Executive Vice President and Chief Medical Officer. Dr. White began her career with DMC as a medical resident and later served as chief resident of emergency medicine at Detroit Receiving Hospital. Her expertise in the field of medicine helped her to establish groundbreaking programs and initiatives alongside many medical school deans, physician leaders, DMC senior executives and affiliated physicians.

“It is an honor to join Dr. Khaldun and the Health Department in Mayor Duggan’s administration,” said Dr. White. “I’m so looking forward to getting started as we work to ensure access to top-notch medical care for all Detroiters.”

Dr. White was a change agent at the DMC and is a champion of quality and care delivery improvement within the healthcare industry and work to bring the same level of quality care to the residents of Detroit.

“I am thrilled to have Dr. White join us.  She is an extremely accomplished physician leader and dedicated to the residents of Detroit,” said Dr. Khaldun. “Her experience and commitment will be an incredible asset as we work to build the health department.”

Prior to becoming DMC CMO, Dr. White served as the Dayanandan Endowed Professor of Emergency Medicine and Pediatrics and chair of Emergency Medicine at Wayne State University. Dr. White also previously served as the medical director of the Michigan Poison Control System, program director for DMC/WSU Fellowship in Medical Toxicology, and founder of the first DMC/WSU EMS/Disaster Medicine Fellowship.

She’s received many recognitions and honors including multiple HOUR Detroit Top Docs recognitions, the 2010 Wayne State University Distinguished Alumna Award.

Dr. White was awarded Modern Healthcare’s “Top 10 Women to Watch in Healthcare 2017” and was among those listed by Becker’s 2016 Hospital Review list of “100 Hospital and Health System CMOs to Know” for exhibiting dedication to clinical leadership and contributing to the establishment of excellence at their respective institutions.

Dr. White is also the Principal Investigator for  a $10M CMS Healthcare Innovation Award to expand primary care access in Detroit.
