The name and worldwide legacy of a rap music icon will be celebrated in Detroit June 19.
In conjunction with the national release of the long-awaited biopic All Eyez on Me, Tupac Shakur fans can gather to remember the late artist at 6 p.m. Monday, June 19, 2017 at Bert’s Warehouse in Eastern Market. Detroit’s own Kern Brantley, bass player for Lady Gaga and collaborator with chart-topping performers from Beyoncé to Mary J. Blige, will lead a live band as open-mic participants sign up to give renditions of their favorite Tupac songs.
Inspired by the title of a Tupac recording, All Eyez on Me chronicles the rise, success, personal challenges and missteps of the controversial performer before his murder in Las Vegas in 1996. A recent inductee of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Tupac rose to icon status in the 90’s, performing concerts, appearing in films and even releasing a book of poetry. The biopic and karaoke event, which is being organized by a Detroit-based company known for creating concert atmospheres for amateur performers, are both scheduled during the month that would have marked Tupac’s 46th birthday.
