Full-figured wasn’t always fabulous for Sharon DuMas.
As a teenager, she was often overlooked by boys, even told by a counselor that a secretary’s job would suit her better than a position of leadership.
But not only did DuMas go on to occupy leadership positions, she embraced her self-image and started an organization to help young women improve theirs.
Full & Fabulous will celebrate 35 years of promoting health, beauty, and self-esteem in “curvy” girls and women at a dinner, fashion and awards gala at 6 p.m. Friday, Sept. 22, 2017 at The Henry Hotel, 300 Town Center Drive in Dearborn.
Detroit native and honored guest Deborah Joy Winans, co-star of the OWN drama series “Greenleaf,” and gospel star Kierra “Ki Ki” Sheard will be among celebrities and community guests recognized in Full & Fabulous’ first awards program.
Recognizing women who serve as leaders and role models that inspire young ladies is the goal, says DuMas.
“We want to celebrate not only fuller-figured women, but those who contribute to healthier lives, healthier communities, and a healthier image of ourselves,” DuMas says.
Full & Fabulous sponsors weekend workshops and a school-based program that educates youth and families about nutrition, beauty and life skills, while aiming to reduce obesity, diabetes, heart disease, hypertension, and other illnesses. Participation in the non-profit program is free.
An actress from a world-renowned, musical Detroit family, Deborah Joy Winans has gained a following as the character Charity in the OWN series “Greenleaf.” Winans will receive the “Drama Icon” award at Full & Fabulous’ 35th anniversary gala. Sheard, who cannot attend, will receive the “Young Gospel Icon” award and will showcase her Eleven60 clothing line in the fashion show.
Other honorees include Tonya Allen, CEO of the Skillman Foundation, and Kenyetta Campbell, executive director of the Cody Rouge Community Alliance, who will receive awards for their work in philanthropy and neighborhood organizing.
