Comerica, Detroit Police Athletic League play a special game of baseball for kids

There are few things that represent warmer weather, old-fashioned fun and children at play than a great game of baseball.

To honor that tradition, Comerica Bank and Detroit Police Athletic League (PAL) recently hosted a special ballgame between Detroit police officers and kids enrolled in PAL youth baseball and softball programs.

Deputy Police Chief celebrates with PAL after throwing the first pitch to kick off the game.

It was the first game at the newly renovated diamond at Calcara Park between Comerica Bank and Detroit Police Athletic League. Participants included Detroit police officers and kids enrolled in PAL youth baseball and softball programs. The inaugural game celebrated the completion of the new field and the start of the 2017 PAL season at the park.

Deputy Police Chief Ulysha Hall threw out the ceremonial first pitch and Comerica presented a gift of 2,400 baseballs and softballs to support the 2017 PAL season during a short opening ceremony, followed by the game.

Comerica awarded $25,000 to Detroit PAL in 2016 to renovate the baseball diamond at Calcara Park. Volunteers from Comerica Bank kicked off the renovation by painting the backstop followed by a professional renovation of the field. The field was completed in early 2017 and will be used for Detroit PAL’s T-ball and coach pitch programs beginning this season.

The field will also be available for use by the surrounding community.

“I’m glad we have a new field that we can plat at,” said Detroit PAL Youth of the Year Caidon Haliburton. “We have some good fields, but nothing like this. It’s nice to know there is somewhere we can play in the city with no problem.”
