Donate! Books needed to help keep young patients reading at Children’s Hospital of Michigan

Having a child in the hospital is a nightmare for parents. Being in the hospital is frightening, often painful and sometimes boring for the kids.

On top of that, for many young people the hospital stays are long and keep them away from school and leave few non-scary outlets for their imagination.

They need an escape, and reading a book offers just that.

So, to tickle those imaginations and keep the kids reading, LittleGuide Detroit has teamed up with Children’s Hospital of Michigan to collect books for the children in their care. LittleGuide Detroit is a free online resource for families to discover kid-friendly events, classes and activities in Detroit and surrounding communities.

“A huge part of the LittleGuide is to give back,” says founder Kerry Doman. “Kids need an escape through books when they are in the hospital.  In honor of March being National Reading Month we want to give back by giving books.”

The hospital staff uses the books as a way to distract children during painful procedures and exams. For some, this will be the first book they own and for others, having access to books can transport them to a whole new world during a long day.

“We all know that reading plays an important role in a child’s well-being and development,” says Luanne Thomas Ewald, Children’s Hospital of Michigan CEO. “Having access to books for children in the hospital is a must.

“We are so thrilled that Kerry chose to support the Children’s Hospital of Michigan patients and to help keep our book shelves full,” she says.

The goal is to collect at least 500 books this month.

Doman has created an Amazon “wish list” to make it simple to select and donate books.  Click here to donate. Don’t worry if Amazon tell you the books you’ve chosen have already been ordered. Duplicates are just fine.  All the books will be delivered to Children’s Hospital of Michigan after the end of March.

“We will continue to do things like this as LittleGuide grows,” Doman says.
