Cinco de Mayo Week launches May 1-5 in Southwest Detroit

Southwest Detroit is preparing for one of its biggest annual celebrations as the special date of May 5 approaches. But unlike Latino communities that observe the Cinco de Mayo (“Fifth of May”) holiday around America, local residents, businesses and neighborhood supporters aren’t limiting their festivities to one day.

May 1 through May 5 marks the return of “Cinco de Mayo Week,” presented by the West Vernor & Springwells Business Improvement District (BID).

“Last year’s ‘Cinco de Mayo Week’ in Southwest Detroit campaign was a tremendous success, drawing thousands of visitors and shoppers to the area,” says West Vernor & Springwells BID Board Chair Jason Ghannam. “Our business owners and community partners are ready to start the celebration and are thrilled to announce this year’s lineup of wonderful promotions and activities.”

Discounts and special incentives at area businesses, bakeries and restaurants, family events, and other highlights are all part of the five-day gala scheduled throughout one of Detroit’s most vibrant districts.

Southwest Detroiters will enjoy the annual Cinco de Mayo holiday with a full week of activities and attractions designed to promote local businesses.

Also featured will be the self-guided “Taco Tour & Tequila Crawl,” from 6 p.m. to midnight during the celebration. Fifteen authentic Mexican restaurants will offer signature drinks, gift certificates and a cultural dining experience to patrons during “Cinco de Mayo Week.”

“We’re thrilled to, once again, showcase our many wonderful, authentic Mexican restaurants during our Taco Tour and Tequila Crawl,” says Ghannam. “This year we’re proud to promote four different tour routes throughout our community, introducing participants to many restaurants they might not have already frequented.”

The tour is supported by the Southwest Detroit Business Association (SDBA) and includes stops in the Patton Park, Central Avenue, Saint Hedwig Park and Clark Park areas. The SDBA and its membership will also support such “Cinco de Mayo Week” highlights as a public art display of Mexican-inspired murals installed on the exterior walls of Southwest Detroit businesses.
