Focus: Hope’s walk for equal rights to celebrate 44th year in Detroit Oct. 14

Detroit’s most prominent anti-poverty organization will continue an annual tradition at 11 a.m. Oct. 14.

Focus: HOPE’s 44th annual March for HOPE is expected to draw thousands of metro Detroiters into the city and Highland Park where they will walk for the goal of bringing awareness to socioeconomic issues and challenges. The theme of 2018’s march is “Celebrating Diversity, Racial Harmony and Voter Engagement.”

“Ironically, 50 years after its founding, the mission of Focus: HOPE — which remains unchanged — is as relevant today as it was in 1968,” says Focus: HOPE CEO Portia Roberson. “As we continue the fight for civil and human rights in this country today, we are confronting the same issues and disparities that existed 50 years ago. Focus: HOPE remains on the forefront of advocating for diversity, inclusion and equal opportunities for everyone, regardless of race or economic status.”

The walk will begin at Focus: HOPE’s Machinist Training Institute, 1200 Oakman Blvd. in Detroit, and follow a route of about three miles, ending again at the Focus: HOPE campus. A Slow Roll bike ride will accompany the event.

Registration begins at 11 a.m., followed by a program at noon. The march and Slow Roll begin at 1 p.m.
