Sprinters to raise dollars for Cass as they dash to The Whitney’s Garden Party

Those heading to opening day of The Whitney’s Garden Parties must sprint to the event.

By sprint, they mean sprint.

On Thursday, May 17 at 6:00 p.m. those attending can either do a .1K “minithon” (0.062 miles. 109.361 yards. 328 feet) across Woodward Avenue or a 5K run around Midtown ending at the garden party.

The sold-out event is called “Sprint to the Spiritsand will benefit Cass Community Social Services (Cass). It is co-sponsored by The Metro Times.

The Whitney’s Garden Parties have been going on for 32 years. This year party goers will ‘Sprint to the Spirits’ for opening day and raise dollars for Cass.

Cass works with men, women and children with HIV/AIDS, medical and mental illness, developmental disabilities and/or substance abuse. It provides for basic needs, including affordable housing, promotes self-reliance and encourages community involvement. Every night, more than 300 homeless men, women and children stay in a Cass facility. Every year 7,000 people volunteer at the agency.

Three hundred people have paid to run and the event has raised $1,500 so far. People are also encouraged to donate at the Garden Party.

Those sprinting to spring will receive cover to the Garden Party and a swag bag that includes a race t-shirt, RUNdetroit pint glass, their first draft beer, sunglasses and more.

“Our garden parties are a sure sign that spring is here and we thought the Sprint to the Spirits would be a fun way to launch this year’s season,” says The Whitney owner, Bud Liebler.  “With great live music every Thursday and with more people than ever wanting to enjoy the Midtown vibe, we’re expecting this year’s garden parties to be the best ever. Let the games begin.”

Fox 2 Detroit’s Charlie Langton will sound the starter’s pistol for 300 participating runners.

The Whitney garden parties will be held, weather permitting, every Thursday from May 17 to September. This year marks the 32nd year for the event.
