Over the past half-decade or so, Motor City Comic Con has grown from a loose assortment of fans of genre fiction and cult-status mediums (like comics) to a scene for the masses.
This year more than 60,000 attendees are expected to walk through the doors of the Suburban Collection Showplace, 46100 Grand River Avenue in Novi, between May 18 and 20 for the show.
“Excitement is mounting for this year’s show, and we are working around the clock to ensure attendees have the time of their lives,” says Miriam Kruger, executive director of Motor City Comic Con.
With that growth and shift in audience, the superheroes of note have moved more to the screen than the page.
In time for the 80th anniversary of the original superhero, Superman, several actors connected to the Man of Tomorrow will be in attendance. This is the 40th anniversary of Superman: The Motion Picture and the franchise it launched and several actors connected to the movies will make their way to Detroit.
Lois Lane herself, Margot Kidder, leads the billing. Instead of the film’s main superman, who passed away in 2004, there will be two other Clark Kent’s from the 1978 film.
Aaron Smolinski and Jeff East, who played the Man of Steel as a toddler and teenager respectively, will show up. Also one of the evil Kryptonians from Superman II, Non, is on the schedule.
Clark Kent from the hit show Smallville, and an Okemos High School graduate, Tom Welling will also have a table.
From the recent CW show Black Lightning, star Cress Williams will make an appearance. Also his character’s daughters, China Anne McClain and Nafessa Williams are on the schedule.
Other superheroes from screens big and small include Val Kilmer (Batman in Batman Forever), Lucy Lawless (Xena: Warrior Princess), and Stephen Mell (Green Arrow from CW’s Arrow).
For any non-superhero minded patrons, there ae plenty of other options:
- Oscar Nunez (Oscar) and Kate Flannery (Meredith) from The Office.
- Five of the kids from the recent hit film IT, Sophia Lillis (Beverly), Wyatt Oleff (Stanley), Chosen Jacobs (Mike), Jaden Leiberher (Bill), and Jackson Scott (George).
- Rob Paulsen (voice of Pinky on Pinky and the Brain)
- Jena Elfman ( Dharma and Greg)
- And many more
The show will take place at Suburban Collection Showplace, 46100 Grand River Ave. in Novi, Friday, May 18 (12:30 p.m. to 7 p.m.), Saturday, May 19 (10:30 a.m. to 7 p.m.) and Sunday, May 20 (10:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.).
The actors will participate in panel discussions and hundreds of comic creators, writers and illustrators will showcase their work. A Cosplay contest will be held on Saturday. Children five and under get in free all weekend. Children 12 and under are free on Sunday.
