Southwest Detroit officially has a new reason to celebrate the success of its neighborhood business and cultural center. The State of Michigan has designated Mexicantown-Hubbard Communities a Michigan Main Street Program, recognizing its potential to help revitalize the city and region.
Mexicantown-Hubbard Communities will share details of the news recently announced by Southwest Detroit Business Association President Robert Dewaelsche and Mexicantown Community Development Corp. Executive Director Raymond Lozano at the “Mexicantown Main Street Kick-Off and Announcement” April 19. The 6 p.m. event will be held at Mexicantown Latino Cultural Center in the Detroit Mexicantown Welcome Center Building, 2835 Bagley Ave.

“The Southwest Detroit Business Association has always played an integral role in bringing the community together with events and activities designed to enhance the quality of life for our residents and serve as an economic boost for businesses,” Dewaelsche says. “Through the many opportunities provided by the Main Street Program, Mexicantown will become revitalized, stronger, and remain focused on its future, while honoring its past.”
The kickoff, which is open to the public, will include an overview of the initiative, which will provide Mexicantown-Hubbard Communities with specialized training that includes implementing the Main Street approach to revitalization. The Michigan Main Street staff and other professionals will work closely with neighborhood leadership to train advisors, recruit volunteers, and establish the program. Instruction valued at more than $100,000 will also be provided to support revitalizing the Mexicantown Commercial District.
Among Mexicantown-Hubbard Communities priorities are: preservation and promotion of the Mexicantown Business District; beautification of the Mexicantown-Corktown viaduct; crime prevention through the Detroit Police Department’s Green Light Project; supporting events that represent the cultural heritage of the area; and continued improvement of commercial facades.
Since 2016 Southwest Detroit Business Association and Mexicantown Community Development Corp. have engaged community stakeholders to solidify a plan to enhance the Mexicantown Business District.
“By successfully engaging its community stakeholders in the revitalization process, and by effectively working as a team on a unified vision for success, the Mexicantown-Hubbard Communities are excited and grateful to receive this designation,” Lozano says.
