Detroit Economic Development Growth Corporation (DEGC) just announced that it is resuming its search for a new president and CEO. Why?
Arthur Jemison, who currently serves as director of housing and revitalization for the City of Detroit, regretfully informed the DEGC board that he will be unable to accept its offer, according to a DEGC spokesperson.
“I was recently made aware of a provision in the City of Detroit Charter and related ordinance, which appears to disqualify me from accepting the position of president and CEO of DEGC at this time,” Jemison said. “After carefully reviewing the matter, I have decided that I must decline this opportunity. I deeply appreciate the confidence of the DEGC board.
“I have informed the board chair that I will be remaining in my position with the City of Detroit to continue the work of revitalizing our neighborhoods and providing quality affordable housing for those who need it.”
According to the City Charter, a city employee is allowed to transition to an agency whose contracts they managed only after a one year gap in their employment with the city.
“We are disappointed, but we respect and understand Arthur’s decision,” said DEGC Board Chairman Jim Vella. “We wish him continued success at the City of Detroit.”
DEGC CFO Glen W. Long, Jr., who has also served as interim president and CEO since April 1, 2017, will continue in that position while the DEGC continues its search for a permanent president and CEO.
