Detroit has so many architectural gems, including skyscrapers, office towers and schools, so it is impressive when you see one of them being honored and converted into homes for current and future city residents.
Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan on Monday joined Banyan Investments in breaking ground on the $10 million renovation (Phase I and II) of the century-old St. Charles school, which will convert the historic building into 35 modern and sleek new residences that will honor the building’s rich heritage.
The St. Charles Residence is located on Townsend Street in the Islandview neighborhood of Detroit on the city’s lower east side. The redevelopment is the first major multi-unit building to get under construction outside the immediate downtown/midtown area.
Each unit will feature an urban style with open concept design, high ceilings and large windows, master suites, and an abundance of outdoor space. Common spaces will also be available in-between the units to provide an extension of the living spaces.
Units range in size from 894 square foot to 1,640 square foot. Residents can expect to move in May 2018 with additional phases planned for more units.
The St. Charles atmosphere is sophisticated yet approachable,” said Aamir Farooqi, CEO of Banyan Investments. “The St. Charles Residence is not going to be the typical conversion of a historic building into lofts,” said Farooqi. “We are excited to be a partner in the city’s plans to lift up this neighborhood.”
The St. Charles was built in 1912. Until recently, the building was operating as the St. Charles School, and as an extension of the neighboring St. Charles church, which is active in the community today.
The St. Charles represents a major investment in another Detroit neighborhood,” said Mayor Duggan. “This development will complement the work the city is planning to help strengthen and stabilize the Islandview community.”
The St. Charles Residence will feature unique shared common areas, work from Detroit-based artists on the walls of common areas, along with a neighborhood vibe with green spaces and tree lined streets, modern finishes and proximity to two Detroit schools.
“These won’t be loft spaces, they’ll be modern residences,” Farooqi said.
The Loft Warehouse is marketing St, Charles Residence and will handle all its sales.
