Business leaders are you “in” on immigration?

Business leaders are you “in” on immigration?

There’s no shortage of conversation around immigration policies, practices and public good these days.

Leading the conversation here at home is Global Detroit, a nationally recognized organization that uses fact-based research to debunk the myths about immigrant impact and assimilation.

The organization, which keeps a keen eye on the economic impact of immigrants, is asking corporations to stand-up, recognize and support its Champions for Growth campaign. This campaign is designed to highlight the economic importance of immigrants to the Metro Detroit community and to prevent erosion of the nation’s immigration laws.

Global Detroit’s Executive Steve Tobocman is leading efforts to get businesses aligned behind mobilizing Detroit’s immigrant potential.

Recent Executive Orders have caused alarm among not only the immigrant community. They’ve also alarmed business leaders and economic development advocates who work with immigrants as a means of sparking regional growth and prosperity, said Steve Tobocman, Global Detroit’s executive director.

In response to the proposed federal policies, which threaten to severely impact the rights of legal immigrants working in the United States and limit the supply of critically needed talent to the regional economy, the campaign, “will focus on mobilizing Detroit’s immigrant potential,” says Tobocman.

“Now more than ever, it’s important business and community members work together to build strong regional policies. We need to counter immigration policies that would devastate our economic growth here in Detroit,” he adds.

Partners and leaders involved in the Champions for Growth campaign signed and shared a pledge recently asserting their belief that immigrants contribute to job creation, economic growth, and regional prosperity, and that a “strong, open, inclusive and welcoming” federal immigration policy can best create prosperity in Southeast Michigan.

Global Detroit is asking business and community leaders, as well as leaders in the immigrant and faith communities to sign the pledge and share their stories with us and with others in Metro Detroit at Champions for Growth events throughout March and into the summer.
