Learn about home ownership and foreclosure at Wayne County event

Homeowners with questions about home ownership, taxes and foreclosure are invited to ask anything or learn more about these topics with Wayne County officials.

Wayne County Treasurer Eric R. Sabree and his staff created a series of information sessions on these important topics in hopes that area homeowners will attend and get the help they need, officials said.

Wayne County Treasurer presents Taxpayer Saturdays meeting places where delinquent taxpayers may ask questions and make payment arrangements.

The treasurer said his office will go out to the four Wayne County Community College campuses to try to reach people at times and places convenient to them. These weekend hearings will accept payments and have an outreach for more information on foreclosure. They will be held every Saturday through February, Sabree said.

“These informal sessions are being held by my office and staff to give another opportunity for taxpayers to discuss options to avoid tax foreclosure,” Sabree said. “We understand that many hard working people have experience financial difficulties and have fallen behind on paying property taxes. We are very glad to partner again with WCCCD to make Saturday hour available so that people will not have to take off work. We want to do everything possible to prevent foreclosures and help the residents of Wayne County.”

The February Taxpayer Saturdays Schedule at Wayne County Community College Campuses is as follows:

February 18: Eastern Campus, Cooper Community Room, 5901 Conner, Detroit, MI 48213-3457
February 25: Downtown Campus, Frank Hayden Community Room, 1001 West Fort Street, Detroit, MI 48226-3001

The sessions, open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. They will also have a host of public-private alliance organizations on hand to provide free financial counseling, assistance with energy bills, home financing and related services.

In January, the Treasurer’s office held what are known as show-cause hearings for people who have received a “yellow bag” formal notice of intent to foreclose on properties in Wayne County. Those who have received a notice are encouraged to attend the hearings, if necessary or to contact the Treasurer’s office to discuss their situation.
