Detroit’s wide assortment of small businesses are nothing, if not unique.
From apparel shops and bakeries to car detailers, coffee shops and art galleries, our independently-owned businesses stand apart from cookie-cutter operations. Detroit’s small businesses add character to our street corners, strengthen our local culture and help build connections between us all. There’s something inspirational about shopping at a store whose owner recognizes your face, remembers your favorite coffee or might even know your name.
Although Detroit is home to more than 47,000 minority-owned businesses, we need more.
While downtown and Midtown business openings dominate headlines, our neighborhoods’ newest arrivals represent big news too. We must find more ways to celebrate the launches and successes of start-ups and “been-ups,” as Mayor Mike Duggan calls independent shops that have served Detroit neighborhoods for decades.
That’s why TheHUB is proud to partner with Comcast Business to introduce our Small Shops series, created to celebrate Detroit’s independent, community-based businesses. Small Shops aims to showcase owners who aren’t accustomed to being in the limelight. Perhaps our coverage can help drive the kind of customer traffic that will sustain their operations, applauding those businesses that were born in Detroit and choose to remain here.
Particularly during this holiday season, when corporate advertising and cyber-deals surround us, TheHUB encourages readers to make a point of patronizing the corner bookstore, buying a car wash, beauty or bakeshop gift certificate and shopping “small.”
Where we shop contributes to the growth and character of our community. Let’s shop Detroit.
