Gallery graces Grandmont Rosedale with a touch of art

A west side community known for its attractive homes and support of small businesses is adding a creative community venue to its landscape.

The Grand River Annex & Norwest Gallery of Art will welcome visitors to its grand opening at 19556 Grand River in Detroit from noon to 7 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 10.

Supported by Grandmont Rosedale Development Corporation (GRDC) and the Kresge Foundation, the annex and gallery will serve as a multi-functional space to house and showcase art, music, food, and retail.

Works by African Americans and Africans from Detroit and throughout the world will be showcased at the Grand River Annex & Norwest Gallery of Art.

“The Grand River Annex is an exciting project for GRDC and the Grandmont Rosedale community,” says Sherita Smith, executive director of the non-profit, community-based organization. “The enhancement of our commercial district with new businesses like Detroit Vegan Soul, Pages Bookshop, and now the Grand River Annex will help us to create a destination corridor within this region.

Founded by Asia Hamilton, Norwest Gallery is a contemporary art venue exhibiting local, national and international, African American and African works. An inaugural exhibition, “Détroit Noir: A Celebration of The Black Aesthetic,” will open with a private reception Saturday, Feb. 3, in conjunction with Black History Month.
